The Fire Scotland Act 2005 and the Fire Safety (Scotland) Regulations came into force on the 1 October 2006.  This legislation imposes a requirement for employers to carry out a Fire Risk Assessment of workplaces to ensure the safety of all employees.  This is how it works:

Step 1
We arrange a site visit to assess your fire safety standards.
Step 2
We provide you with an estimate of cost to prepare the assessment.
Step 3
If you wish to progress, we write a report which includes recommendations of actions to take to become compliant with the new legislation.
Step 4
You should then action the recommendations (we can help with this).  If you employ more than five people, have members of the public entering the premises, or have a licence (eg. a drinks licence), you will receive a certificate.
Step 5
If the recommendations include staff training we can provide that for you either at your premises, or at our training centre.

If required, we can help you source the products you need to meet your Fire Safety Assessment recommendations. These include:

  • Fire Blankets
  • Fire Extinguishers
  • Fire Alarm Systems
  • Hazard or Emergency Exit Signs

At PJB Fire Safety Training we can tailor courses to suit your requirements.

Some workplaces are at particular risk, for instance, if you have members of the public on your premises, or run licensed premises like bars, restaurants or hotels.

Fires at rural communities and farms are also frequent. We often deliver seminars and courses to the rural community to minimise the risk of tragic incidents. We can also undertake assessments of individual farms, if required.

We have outlined briefly below the main courses we offer. Please call us for more detailed information.

Fire Extinguisher Training
If you have portable fire extinguishers on your premises, your staff must be trained how to use them. This course will ensure that your staff are competent in using fire-fighting equipment, taking into account the number of staff, available equipment, size of premises and specific hazards.

We offer this course in two ways:

  • As a short training session for you and your staff to ensure you comply with the regulations
  • A two-hour training session including a lecture and a hands-on practical training session outside using real fire

Fire Warden and Fire Marshal Training
This training can be delivered independently, but it is often beneficial to combine it with the Fire Extinguisher Training.

The course includes fire awareness, actions in the event of a fire, safe methods of travel in smoke and heat, and identification and safe handling of fire extinguishers.

Disabled Person Evacuation Training
This course provides information, guidance and training on fire evacuation of people with disabilities from non-domestic premises.

It includes understanding disability groupings, planning for evacuation, how to use a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) and how to use an evac chair or similar device.

Peter Butcher is a director of Woodward (Scotland), one of the largest and most well established NEBOSH, IOSH and CIEH health and safety training centres in the UK.

This affiliation allows us to call upon our colleagues at Woodward Scotland to provide a wide range of health and safety training, including Construction Safety and Environmental Management training.

This means that we can provide all your fire, health and safety requirements from one single source.
